The Hellenic Lyceum Sydney has one of the largest collections of Greek traditional costumes outside of Athens Greece. These have been collected since 1950’s until today. The Lyceum’s collection is of costumes from all regions of Greece. The Greek traditional dress is of ancient origin with varied influences. Each costume comes with detailed embroidery and complete with traditional jewellery which is either silver or gold and studded with coloured stones. The Greek costume uses bold colours and comes with many different parts and complicated head dress.
Over the years the Hellenic Lyceum Sydney has contributed to exhibitions with their collection of traditional costumes and artefacts. Exhibitions have been held at David Jones, State Office Block, National Trust, Lindsay House, Blaxland Gallery and many other significant buildings. Currently there is an exhibition of our costumes at the Greek Consulate Office. It is the Lyceums aim to establish a permanent home for our artefacts.
